the Showmen

Amherst, 1968-70+

The Showmen were formed by Ron Zehel after Ronnie and the Rainbows disbanded. The other members were not in R&R.

For their only 45, they recorded a tribute song to legendary drag racer "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. Drag racing was very popular in south Lorain County in the 1960s, with the Dragway 42 raceway nearby where Garlits and all the famed drag racers of the time raced.

The 45 was released on the Boddie subsidiary Soul Kitchen, the only white rock group on that label. It's not clear if the record was recorded at Boddie. The record comes with drawing of Garlits on a picture sleeve. The flip side "Judy" is a greaser ballad.
