the Santells

Fremont, 1963-1965

Ad from March 1964, the only newspaper mention we could find.

The Santells second 45 has to be one of the most travelled indie 45s from Ohio. Released to moderate local success in 1965, the record was picked up for release in the UK, Canada, Belgium, Germany, and Australia on major labels in those countries.

As far as the origins of the group, there is not a lot known. The group was from the Fremont area but only appears once in the papers that we could find. The group recorded their first 45 in early 1964, it was not a hit. The songs were written by label owner Bob Brown, and have a 1950s vocal group sound to them.

A year later they were back with a second 45. The A side was "So Fine", a remake of a 1950s hit by the Fiestas updated with a early 1960s girl group sound. The other side was written by Joseph Gentaline and published by the Courier publishing. The record got some airplay and was re-released by L&S records from Los Angeles.

Some months later the record was released in Canada. A Canadian label operator, Robert Stone, got a hold of it and released on the Canadian Sparton label. That release made it's way to the UK were it was released on the Sue label, and then onto Belgium and Australia.

Strangely, there is nothing online about the identity of the group as of this writing, no relatives comments on Youtube, no Facebook.
