the Quaddells / Allan and the Quaddells

Warren, 1962-4

The Quaddells were a pre-British Invasion rock-n-roll band from Warren. The band was led by Allan Jenkins aka Allan Shayne. The band was described as five members. The other known members were Al Martini on sax and Chuck Folman on drums.

The band's first 45 was released on the Vida label from New York. The two sides are hard rockin' instrumentals with sax and guitar leads. The drummer plays a continuous 'paradiddle' beat through "Quad-Drill". This record came out in late 1962, as best we can tell.

The band had another 45 in the summer/fall of 1963, which, according to the ad, had some local interest in the A side "The Woody Surfer". The sound on this side is a lot like "Quad-Drill" with some reverb guitar added to, you know, make it "surfy". The band is listed as Alan and the Quaddells. This record came out on another New York label, Goldisc, which was mainly a label for local vocal groups.

The band was still active into late 1964 but nothing else we could find beyond that. The two clubs listed inthe ads, Hanna's Gateway in Warren, and the Parkway Manor in Canton, were places they played often. They also played in Akron, East Liverpool, and Charleston, WV.
