Paul Hopkins Jr. and the Sheiks / C.T. and the Cast-A-Ways
Springfield, 1964-6
Above story from August 1966
Paul Hopkins Jr. was the lead guitarist for a band that included Ronnie Murray, one of the Cou;lings who recorded "Young Dove's Calling" in 1958. The other members, as of August 1966, were Tom McLintic on bass and Bobby Bowshier on drums. Bobby was Donnie Bowsher's younger brother and played with Donnie for most of Donnie's career, but Donnie took some time off in the mid 1960s and Bobby played in some other bands,
The band, possibly as a three piece without Ronnie, recorded a 45 on Alco. The two sides are guitar instrumentals, with "Hypnotized Lady" having a nice moody sound. The record was produced by Henbie Smith. There is a least one copy with an autographed label (Paul, Tom, and Bobby).
The next part of the story is a bit of conjecture. In late 1964 Prism released a new recording of "Young Dove's Calling" credited to C.T. and the Cast-A-Ways. There is nothing about this band in the papers so the assumption is that Ronnie Murray is singing the remake and some or all of the Sheiks are backing him up. The record has an organ (the flip has a piano) so we don't know who that may have been. The flip side is a country song written by Johhny Bond. On the Young Dove side the credits on the record omit Chuck Zimmerman and change the publishing to Buna.
