Liberty Street / Kevin Mabry and Liberty Street
Milford Center, 1970-1989
August, 1972 picture
Liberty Street were a long running band from the Marysville area. The band was started in 1970 by Kevin Mabry. Kevin was the lead singer and guitarist. In 1971, his brother Victor joined, playing drums. When the band started, Kevin was still in Fairbanks High School. The brothers came from Milford Center, a village just SW of Marysville.
The band started out as a rock band, with Doug Yoder on bass. There were four or five members, one playing lead guitar, possibly named Byers. They recorded a 45 at Musicol in 1973 that is well recorded and shows the band's country influences, as the A side "Ride This Train" sounds like the early Eagles. A few months later they made a second 45 at Musicol, an original backed with a cover of the country standard "Talk Back Tremblin Lips". Both the 45s were self released on their own Freedom label.
August 1974 story
The band moved strongly into the country
direction and became a
very popular band in the region. By 1974 the band included Bill Purk on
lead guitar, Galen Overholt, and Ed Evilsizor. They made a few more
45s, all on the Rome label family, and three LPs though 1982. The
second LP in the chronological order, "Green Scene", was created for
Scotts, the lawn care products company based in Marysville. The band
was listed as Kevin Mabry and Liberty Street for all the later
recordings.
From
1975 through the 1980s, the band members changed, with the Mabry
brothers and Bill Purk staying as constant members. Gary Markin was the
bass player during the late 1970s and early 1980s recordings. Doug
Yoder returned to the band later in the 1980s.
In 1989 Kevin Mabry retired the band and dedicated himself to Christian music. In the 2000s the band was revived for shows.
