the Great Society

Cincinnati, 1966-8

pic

A five member band of local college students, the Great Society outlasted President Lyndon Johnson's namesake program and played local dances for a couple years. The band included four U of Cincinnati students, Tilo Schiffer (lead singer), Tom Wise (lead guitar), Bill Bayer (keyboards), and Charlie Jung (drums). Steve Sturgill, a University of Kentucky student, rounded out the band on bass.

They recorded one 45, issued first on WSAI DJ Tom Dooley's Dana Lynn label. The record was recorded at Allen-Martin in Louisville and includes nice Zombies styled songs on both sides, written by Tilo Schiffer. The songs feature Bill Bayer's electric piano. A month or so after the release, Counterpart reissued it. According to label paperwork, Hans Schiffer, Tilo's father, was the band manager.
