Whistler's Mother

Barnesville, 1967 - 1970

Whistler's Mother was a high school band with a little difference - the members attended a private Quaker (Friends) high school in Barnesville, the Olney Friends School.

The band included Nathan Kirk (guitar) Mathew (Matt) Becker (guitar), David Howarth (drums), and John Stuckey (bass). Becker was from Michigan while the others were local (Nathan was from Salem).

There was nothing about the band in the local papers, they played mostly school functions, and were together as Whistler's Mother for the school year.

The band recorded a 45 at Musicol in the summer of 1970. The studio log date is May 5 and the copyright date is June 8. The A side "Dark Dawn" is a heavy winner in the NE Ohio style that sounds like they are using an unusual tuning.  A Youtube post by John Stuckey has more details, with Matt playing lead on a National guitar, John Stuckey with a Secova bass, Nathan Kirk with a Baldwin guitar, and Dave Howarth using Sears drums.

Kirk and Stuckey graduated in 1970, and Howarth graduated in 1971. The graduation of Kirk and Stuckey meant the end of the band, however they continued playing music together and have a number of recordings on Youtube, a few with Dave Howarth.

Nathan Kirk is deceased.
