the Proto Jays / Rivieras

Toledo, 1965-70

The Proto Jays were a soul vocal group from Toledo. They recorded a 45 for Riley's records in Detroit. The record was issued twice under two different names. According to a group member, the Proto Jays record was first, but other info suggests the Rivieras was first.

The group performed in the great lakes area, Chicago, Indiana, Ohio, greater Detroit. They were on the Ken Hawkins World Of Soul TV show to perform the songs on the 45.

The group's momentum was hurt when Riley's operation was damanged by a bombing in 1968.
