the Monorays

Youngstown? 1959

Very little is known to us about the Monorays, who were definitely a vocal group. There were groups with that name in other US cities far from Ohio but nothing to be found and no rememberances of them posted on-line or in the Youngstown paper.

They recorded a 45 for Tammy with both sides having a classic doowop/group sound. The record was a pick in Billboard and Cashbox and shows up on a Texas radio survey. The record had an initial local release and then a nationally distributed version with Jubilee records behind it, still using the Tammy label. The record was very popular in Pittsburgh and was re-issued there in the mid 1960s on the Red Rocket label.

The band on the record was credited to Tony March and Orchestra, probably a group Tony put together using local musicians from Del Sinchak and Bill Davids bands.

There were other unrelated Monorays groups who recorded for Nasco (from Nashville area) and 20th Century.
