the Mar-Vels

Youngstown, early 1960s

The Mar-Vels were one of the last old style vocal groups from Youngstown. There is nort much known about them. They were active from the early 1960s until 1966, the latest date found in the Vinidicator newspaper for them peforming at Idora Park.

The group recorded two 45s on Tammy within a year. The first one has the ballad "Somewhere In Life" as the A side. The songs is credited to Tony March, Hayward Woods, and Robert Thomas Jr. Thomas and Woods are assumed to be group members. A group, or ad-hoc backing band, listed as Larry and the Lads are backing them up.

The second 45 is the uptempo dance song "Mar-Vel Stomp" backed with a classic style ballad "My Guardian Angel". The writer credits are March, Woods, and Bill McDowell, possibly another group member. The name "D. Wallace" is also on the label for "Mar-Vel Stomp" but only Tony March is listed in the copyrights.

That's all we know for now.
