Larry and the Stingrays / Larry and the Larks

Youngstown, 1964-67

Larry and the Stingrays were the name of a band who recorded one 45 for Tammy. Larry appears to be Larry Greene of the Edsels, but the Edsels were still together in 1964 so he may have left the group, recorded this as a one-off.

The A side is the Fats Domino/Roy Brown classic. The flip side is an original credited to Larry Greene and Steve Varsho. Varsho was probably a band member - if Larry and the Stingrays were a real band - but he was definitely in a band. He was killed in a car accident in 1973. His obituary mentions his band as the Shackles. There was a local band with that name playing in the mid 1960s. Perhaps they were moonlighting on the session.

Larry Greene and Steve Varsho also recorded a 45 as Larry and the Larks. The name was used only for the 45. Carmen Horvath played the lead fuzz guitar. He was 14-15 at the time. The record has a very soul soul/garage hybrid sound. The flip side of the Larry and the Larks record was a remake of an Edsels song.
