Gary Mann and the Sultans
Youngstown? 1962
Gary Mann and the Sultans recorded a 45 on Tammy in 1962. The record is one of the label's most obscure.
We don't have any info about the group. The songs were copyrighted by John D. Gayles and William H. Franklin. There was a John D. Gayles living in Youngstown, he would have been about 40 in 1962. There was nothing about any of the names that was in the Vindicator newspaper, relating to music.
There were two Gary Manns who were recording artists that could be connected to the record. One was credited as Plez Gary Mann, a country /rockabilly artist in Yolyn, West Virginia, which is a long distance from Youngstown. The other Gary Mann was a trumpet player who was based out of New Orleans but toured the nightclub circuit including several long engagements in Cleveland and other Ohio cities. The trumpeter Gary Mann recorded two 45s for the Lanco label in 1970, but his career timeline does not match for being in Youngstown in 1962.
