the Del-Rays

Struthers/Campbell, 1961-4

The Del-Rays were an early rock-n-roll band from the Youngstown suburbs of Struthers and Campbell. The band had five members, Nick Timsisko on bass and backing vocals, Johnny Stanko on guitar and lead vocals, Danny Carbon on keyboards, Joe "Mouse" Kalaman on sax and vocals, and Bruce Dill on drums.

The band played their first gig in September 1961 and became a popular local band. Their most lasting contribution may be their influence on the younger teen bands, several of them cited the Del-Rays as a band they looked up to.

The band played typical songs of the day. mixing vocal group covers and rock-n-roll band sounds. The played the Elms Ballroom often, along with teen dances at Idora Park and other local sites.

They recorded one 45 on Tammy. Tony March is credited with "Run-Around-Lou", a deliberate takeoff on "Runaround Sue". The record wasn't a big hit.

The band ended in January 1964. They had a couple reunions in 1991 and 2009.

Johnny Stanko played in the late 1960s/early 1970s band J.J. Rabbit
