the Couplings
Springfield, 1958
The Couplings from Springfield were a one hit (sorta) one record wonder. The two members were Ronnie Murray and Eddie Campbell. Ronnie was from Springfield and Eddie (or Eddy) was from Yellow Springs.
Floyd Whited from Spangle records had a song written by Chuck Sims/Zimmerman, "Young Dove's Calling". The song was credited to Zimmerman and Harold Galbreath, who seems to have been a lawyer used to assist copyright as Chuck was a minor. He found Ronnie and Eddie and figured they could record the song together. Floyd named them the Couplings and got the record placed to Josie records in New York. The flip side was"I Can See", which was credited to Rammond and Givens.
The record was a hit in certain areas of the US but not in enough markets to make it a national hit, reaching the top 100 for Cashbox and Record World, but not BIllboard. Canada and Australia picked up the record for release in their countries, There was no release of the Couplings in the UK, but an English pop vocal group, the Mudlarks, recorded "Young Dove's Calling" as the flip side to their big hit "Lollipop". We hope that Chuck Zimmerman got some money out of it.
The duo appeared on American Bandstand and did some shows around the area. The group did not record a follow up and the two went their seperate ways.
Ronnie and Eddie continued to perform locally. Ronnie was the guitar player in the Paul Hopkins band that recorded for Alco.
In 1965 "Young Dove's Calling" was re-recorded by a band called C.T. and the Cast-A-Ways and released by Floyd Whited on Prism. That band may have been some or all of the same folks in the Paul Hopkins band.
Floyd also recycled the Couplings moniker for a 1964 group that recorded on Prism. There is no other connnections between the two Couplings.
